Happy New Year!

This year as a community, we faced some huge challenges as well as moments of progress and solidarity. There were bans and legislations implemented in the UK and the USA,  which targeted the LGBTQ+ community and DEI projects, many big corporations who had previously supported Pride, pulled out of sponsorships and a big shift in attitudes and ally-ship has been prevalent throughout the year, making us all, at times, feel unsafe and scared for what the future may look like. During these tough times however, we have seen hope, there have been the supporters who have remained unwavering in their support, and we as a community have shown up for each other. London Trans+ Pride had a record turnout, around 100,000 people marched in Budapest Pride despite government bans and a new national memorial was unveiled for LGBTQ+ members of the British Armed Forces, to name but a few wins!

The setbacks we faced, have reminded us that acceptance and safety are not guaranteed but must always be defended and advocated for, not only for our community but with all marginalised groups. This year has taught us all that one loud voice can create monumental problems, but together, through connection, education and empathy, we can be even louder.

As you head into the new year, think about what you want to leave behind, what you want to take with you, or the lessons you’ve learned this year that have shaped who you are now and where you want to see yourself going in 2026 and beyond. As you shift into a new you, remember to breathe and take one step at a time.

Wishing you a Happy New Year, from everyone at 2BU.
